OpenAI Economic Research Exchange

The OpenAI Economic Research Exchange supports carefully scoped collaborations with external researchers conducting research on the economic impacts of AI. We invite concise, executable proposals that begin with an important economic question about AI and explain how approved, privacy-preserving use of OpenAI data or context could help answer it.

Applicants whose proposals align with current OpenAI Economic Research priorities may be invited to a follow-up conversation about ways of working and a technical screening for the person who would perform the hands-on analysis.

Enter the name of the primary researcher or project lead.

We will use this address for all application follow-up.

University, research organization, company, or independent affiliation.

Please provide a link to a concise proposal in a Google Doc shared with econresearch@openai.com. The proposal should include the research question, motivation, empirical strategy, expected contribution, and why the project fits the OpenAI Economic Research Exchange. Proposals should be no more than three pages, excluding references and appendices.

Does the project require approved usage data from ChatGPT, the API, Codex, or another OpenAI product? Be specific about the granularity of the data, the unit of analysis, whether linkage to external data would be needed, and how the proposed design would preserve privacy.

Enter the name of the designated researcher or RA who would join to support on the project.

List the PI(s), collaborators, proposed RA(s), and relevant experience for the proposed project.

Indicate whether the project is short-term (2-6 months), medium-term (6-12 months), or long-term, and list the main milestones and expected outputs.

Describe any anticipated publication, working paper, conference, policy brief, dataset, benchmark, or public communication associated with the project.
