Sora usage guidelines

Below are some tips on how to respect Sora’s guardrails and ensure that all usage complies with ethical standards, legal requirements, and OpenAI’s Usage Policies.

1. Compliance with OpenAI’s usage policies

All Sora users have agreed to OpenAI’s Usage Policies, Service Terms, and Terms of Use. These policies apply universally to OpenAI services and are designed to ensure safe and responsible usage of AI technology. You can review OpenAI’s updated Usage Policies here.

Sora is currently available to adults who are at least 18 years old.

1.1 Use of likenesses without permission

You may not create videos that depict the likeness of any individual without their explicit consent. This includes both public and private figures, though the depiction of deceased historical figures is permitted. Uploads that contain children under 18 are not permitted, even with their permission.

1.2 Avoid illegal content or content that may violate intellectual property rights

OpenAI’s Terms prohibit any content that may violate the law—including using the intellectual property of others in ways that violate their rights.

1.3 Inappropriate and harmful content

Sora users are prohibited from creating or distributing content that promotes harm. This includes content that is generated to bully, harass, defame, discriminate based on protected attributes, sexualize children, or promote violence, hatred or the suffering of others. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Sexually explicit content, including non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII), and content that sexualizes children

  • Excessive gore or violence, including depictions of self-harm

  • Content unsuitable for a general audience due to its obscene, suggestive, or graphic nature

1.4 Misleading content

Our policies prohibit any use of Sora to create or distribute content that is used to defraud, scam, or mislead others and should disclose the use of AI in the video generation process. So users should not:

  • Spread misinformation or disinformation

  • Create misleading content intended to defraud or scam others

  • Take steps to obscure or hide the use of AI technology in the video generation process

2. Reporting violations

If you encounter content that you believe violates any of our policies, please report it immediately. We take all violations seriously and will review reported content for compliance with our terms and the broader OpenAI Usage Policies.
