Sora is here

We’re moving our video generation model out of research preview.

Our video generation model is rolling out at sora.com(opens in a new window).

Earlier this year, we introduced Sora, our model that can create realistic videos from text, and shared our initial research progress on world simulation. Sora serves as a foundation for AI that understands and simulates reality—an important step towards developing models that can interact with the physical world.

We developed a new version of Sora—Sora Turbo—that is significantly faster than the model we previewed in February. We’re releasing it today as a standalone product at Sora.com to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users.

A new interface just for Sora

We’re releasing a wide range of features which we first shared in our technical report.

Users can generate videos up to 1080p resolution, up to 20 sec long, and in widescreen, vertical or square aspect ratios. You can bring your own assets to extend, remix, and blend, or generate entirely new content from text.

We’ve developed new interfaces to make it easier to prompt Sora with text, images, and videos. Our storyboard tool lets users precisely specify inputs for each frame.

We also have Featured and Recent feeds that are constantly updated with creations from the community.

Sora availability and subscriptions

Sora is included as part of your Plus account at no additional cost. You can generate up to 50 videos at 480p resolution or fewer videos at 720p each month.

For those who want more Sora, the Pro plan includes 10x more usage, higher resolutions, and longer durations. We’re working on tailored pricing for different types of users, which we plan to make available early next year.1

Our approach to deployment

The version of Sora we are deploying has many limitations. It often generates unrealistic physics and struggles with complex actions over long durations. Although Sora Turbo is much faster than the February preview, we’re still working to make the technology affordable for everyone.

We’re introducing our video generation technology now to give society time to explore its possibilities and co-develop norms and safeguards that ensure it’s used responsibly as the field advances. 

All Sora-generated videos come with C2PA(opens in a new window) metadata, which will identify a video as coming from Sora to provide transparency, and can be used to verify origin. While imperfect, we’ve added safeguards like visible watermarks by default, and built an internal search tool that uses technical attributes of generations2 to help verify if content came from Sora.

Today, we’re blocking particularly damaging forms of abuse, such as child sexual abuse materials and sexual deepfakes3. Uploads of people will be limited at launch, but we intend to roll the feature out to more users as we refine our deepfake mitigations4. We hope this early version of Sora will enable people everywhere to explore new forms of creativity, tell their stories, and push the boundaries of what’s possible with video storytelling. We’re excited to see what the world will create with Sora.

    Sora is not included with ChatGPT Team, Enterprise, or Edu. It is also not currently available to people under the age of 18. Right now, users can access Sora everywhere ChatGPT is available, with the exception of the United Kingdom, Switzerland and the European Economic Area. We are working to expand access further in the coming months.

    In the future, we plan to explore potential partnerships with NGOs and research organizations to grow and improve the provenance(opens in a new window) ecosystem. We believe tools like these are essential for building trust in digital content and helping users recognize authentic creations.

    Our top priority is preventing especially damaging forms of abuse, like child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and sexual deepfakes, by blocking their creation, filtering and monitoring uploads, using advanced detection tools, and submitting reports to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) when CSAM or child endangerment is identified.

    Likeness is currently only available as a pilot feature to a small group of early testers. To address concerns around misappropriation of likeness and deepfakes, we’ve set particularly strict moderation standards for uploads featuring people and continue to block content with nudity. Users who have access to this feature will also see in-product reminders about our policies, including what’s allowed and what isn’t. We will actively monitor patterns of misuse, and when we find it we will remove the content, take appropriate action, and use these early learnings to iterate on our approach to safety.

    To prepare Sora for broader use, we worked with red-teamers—domain experts in areas like disinformation, illegal content, and safety—who rigorously tested the model to identify potential risks. Their feedback played a key role in shaping Sora, helping us fine-tune safeguards while making the model as useful as possible. We have also built on the robust safety systems that have been developed and refined over the years to support ChatGPT, DALL·E, and our API product.
